Mayor Mick Hayes Blog - March 2020

Welcome to my March Blog

Over my mayoral year, the Mayoress and I have had the pleasure of visiting many community, voluntary, faith groups, businesses and individuals, who do so much for the Borough. I know they will try and continue to do what they can in these difficult times.

Thank you to them, and to the amazing  NHS, the emergency services and council staff working in such extreme pressures. I thought that I would mention some of the last events we were able to go to around the Borough.

The Big Half Marathon 2020

I attended the finish line of the Big Half Marathon 2020 on the morning of 1st March at the Cutty Sark. I helped out with the Award ceremony for the winners. But it was amazing to see so many people finishing the Half Marathon and many running in aid of worthwhile charities. We had 45 runners participating for the Mayors Charity Appeal, the Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice, including the Leader of the Council, Couuncillor Danny Thorpe. Well done to all.

Later that day we attended the 100th Birthday of Elizabeth, mentioned in my previous blog and a Thanksgiving Service for the Caribbean Social Forum who were celebrating their 5th Birthday.

This is a great organisation.  Over 180 members came to the event with family and friends.

The Chapel, Old Royal Naval College

The Mayoress and I attended a Founders Day evensong  on 2nd March, organised by the Nelson Society.

School events

The Mayoress and I attended World Book Day celebrations at Holy Family Catholic Primary School on 5 March, where all the pupils dressed up for the school assembly.

On 11th March, I attended an exhibition grand opening at Linton Mead Primary School, inspired by the 150th birthday of the Cutty Sark Clipper Ship. It was a a fantastic exhibition of which the school was very proud. An exciting whole school project.

Mayors Charity events

We manage to fit in two fundraising events this week. The visit by London and Kent Mayors to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich on 9th March and a community coffee morning on 11th March.

Thank you for everyone who came to the coffee morning.  It was very well supported. I was delighted that many of the groups that I had meet in my year attended the event. I think it was enjoyed by all, everyone coming together for a good cause, as we knew that the social isolating would follow soon.

St. Patrick's Day

The Mayoress and I attended the St Patrick Day celebrations of the Greenwich Irish Pensioners at the Clarendon Hotelon 12th March! As always, it was a joyful celebration and it was a real pleasure to be there.

Deptford Methodist Mission

Our final function was to attend the Deptford Methodist Mission Monday Club on the evening of 16th March. This is a club for adults with learning difficulties assisted by a group of volunteers and students who keep the evening running smoothly.

So finally, the Mayoess and I would like to send to all residents of the Royal Borough of Greenwich our best wishes. Keep Safe.
