See the designs for the new iron gates and give us your comments.

The designs are part of plans to replace the current wooden gates at the west end of the Church and help stabilise and secure the Church for future generations.

New gates

The most pressing requirement for the enhancement of the Church is the erection of new gates at the west end of the Church to replace the large wooden doors presently in place.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich succeeded in a bid to the LIBOR Fund for the cost of replacing the old wooden gates, and a working committee formed of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, a member of Holtop and a representative of the Woolwich Garrison Church Trust, which is now responsible for the building.

The plans and drawings for the new gate design will be available to see at the Church, with members of the team on hand to answer any questions before being submitted as a formal consultation later in the summer for approval.

About St George's Garrison Church

The Church, opposite the Royal Artillery Barracks on Grand Depot Road in Woolwich, is an important part of the Royal Borough's local heritage. Although largely destroyed by a flying bomb in July 1944, the east end of the Church survived. It is this part which contains the beautiful Venetian mosaics commissioned for the Church at the end of the 19th century, and the Royal Artillery VC Memorial.

Through the fund-raising efforts of Heritage of London Trust Operations (Holtop) and a matched contribution from the Heritage Lottery Fund, a fine arched tensile roof has already been erected over the east end of the Church. A memorial garden is located where the nave used to be, which has recently been re-planted.
