It features a series of landmark policies to protect and preserve these much-loved assets for the enjoyment of residents and visitors. The strategy also sets out a commitment to delivering quality services to protect the natural and cultural heritage of the borough.

The centre-piece of the strategy is to work hand-in-hand with the dedicated and passionate Friends of Parks and other community groups who invest so much of their time for the benefit of us all.

Key policies

The key policies include:

• A commitment to retaining 12 Green Flag Awards and using them as a benchmark for quality and maintenance of the borough's main parks
• Undertaking a full tree stock survey every five years
• Ensuring that the maintenance and care of local parks and open spaces provides opportunities for young people through apprenticeships and workplace schemes
• Increasing use of social media and digital technology to develop more inclusive services
• Continuing to encourage family friendly activities and exercise in the Royal Borough's parks such as Eltham Junior Park Run and the annual Parks Fest.

About the strategy

The strategy's preparation has been informed by the views and needs of residents and park users gathered via public surveys and focus group meetings.

We heard that 76 per cent of respondents were either very or fairly satisfied with the Royal Borough's Parks and Open Spaces; the Strategy seeks to build on this success through working more closely with Parks groups, users and the local community.

Residents also stated their priorities for the future that included cleaning standards, repair and maintenance of facilities and to increase biodiversity and natural habitats.

Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Environment, Councillor Jackie Smith, said "This is a strategy by and for the Royal Borough's park users and residents. It recognises the value and assurance already shown by residents, staff and community groups to help maintain and improve our parks and open spaces.

"It also reinforces our need to maintain and increase this partnership approach to help us care for and improve our parks and open spaces for the benefit of and enjoyment of future generations."
