NHS reminder to get winter flu jabs

Published Thursday, 08 December 2011

People with certain health conditions can help protect themselves against seasonal flu viruses by claiming a free jab.

Seasonal flu jabs are available now at GP practices, with those who have a serious or long-term health conditions possibly eligible for a free injection.

Flu (influenza) is a viral infection that mainly affects the nose, throat and the lungs.

It is very infectious and can spread quickly. The virus is mainly spread by breathing in droplets from an infected person who coughs or sneezes.

Each year a new vaccine is produced to protect against the flu viruses expected to be in circulation that winter and to boost the immune response.

The vaccine is very safe and side effects are uncommon and usually mild.

It is not recommended for everyone, but it is advisable for those likely to be more seriously affected by flu.
