The Council has agreed to award the contract for a raft of improvements at the Flowers Estate in Abbey Wood to City Heights (London) Limited following a competitive tendering process.

The program of works has been developed by the Council in response to residents' concerns over the damage caused to the communal staircase area from anti-social behaviour.

Repairs and improvements to be made across the estate

Works to the estate, which has 318 homes in 17 blocks, include repairs to the rails and glazing around the stairwells as well as the general redecoration of the communal areas.

External improvements are also to be made including new overlays to balconies and staircase flat roofs and the installation of 'lightning conductors.

New security common entrances and door entry systems are also to be installed at around half of the blocks where this upgrade is needed.

Responding to concerns from residents

Cllr Chris Kirby the Cabinet Member for Housing, said: "Concerns were raised at a consultation meeting for residents regarding damage to communal areas from anti-social behaviour.

We took these concerns on board and Royal Borough of Greenwich surveyors undertook extensive surveys of the blocks on the Flowers Estate to draw up a schedule for works to address the concerns expressed. 

"We firmly believe listening the views of residents and acting upon them is the very best way to drive forward improvements to our housing services."

He said: "The works are part of the Royal Borough's long term sustained program of investment to its Council homes to ensure all its tenants and leaseholders live in good quality environments and places they can feel proud to call home."

The budget for the works on the Flowers Estate was agreed by Cabinet as part of the 2017/18 Housing Capital Programme and a contract for £1,282,445.77 was awarded to City Heights (London).
