May is National Walking Month so there's no better time to explore the great outdoors in Greenwich.

Greenwich Get Active, run in partnership with The Royal Borough of Greenwich and delivered by Charlton Athletic Community Trust, offer lots of free guided walks across the borough no matter what your fitness levels are. Whether you fancy a wander in Woolwich or a meander around Mottingham, there's a walk for you.

The walks showcase some of Greenwich's highlights and green spaces - from a River Ramble on Saturday mornings starting by the Royal Arsenal and finishing at the Cutty Sark to brisk walks in Oxleas Woods.

You can even try out Nordic walking - which works your upper body as well as your legs - in Woolwich, Charlton and Eltham or walking football in Eltham.

Walking has lots of health benefits including lowering your cholesterol, improving sleep and helping manage stress.

Ten minute walks

Just a brisk ten minute walk every day to get your heart pumping can make a difference to your health. Public Health England have launched the Active 10 app to make it easier to find out how much brisk walking you're doing and how you can do more.

'A great, low-impact way of exercising'

Steve Whiteman, Director of Public Health, said: "Walking is a great, low-impact way of exercising whatever age you are. Greenwich Get Active's free guided walks are also a good way to get motivated, find out more about the area where you live and meet new people - so why not dig out your comfy shoes and explore your local area or another part of the borough?"
