Energy efficiency

Sustainable energy and energy efficiency

Most of the world's energy comes from the burning of fossil fuels, which produce large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Using less energy, or looking to other sources of energy, can help reduce the release of greenhouse gases into the earth's atmosphere.

What you can do

Ensure that your roof and walls are properly insulated, your boiler is working efficiently and you use energy-efficient light bulbs. Having an energy efficient home will also help keep fuel costs down.

What the Council is doing

We have implemented several sustainable energy programmes, including:

  • solar hot water schemes
  • solar-generated electricity
  • energy efficiency as part of the Decent Homes programme
  • Combined Heat and Power (CHP) schemes
  • solar powered pedestrian refuges
  • 'green' street lighting.

As a result, the Housing Energy Rating for Greenwich Council homes has increased from 52 (April 2000) to 69.6 (April 2007).

We want your feedback

The Council recognises that more work has to be done to ensure energy saving measures. What do you think the Council should do to improve energy efficiency? What would encourage you to carry out energy efficiency measures?

Please send your feedback to the Energy Efficiency Team.
