British citizenship

Becoming a British citizen is a significant event in your life. As a British citizen, you are joining a community made up of many different backgrounds, cultures and faiths.

To obtain British citizenship you must apply through the Home Office, Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND).

How to apply

Applications and cost information can be obtained from the Home Office website.

To become a citizen you must be able to prove proficiency in the English language and pass the mandatory UK Living Test which can be taken at centres across London.

If your application for British citizenship is successful, the Home Office will write inviting you to a citizenship ceremony.

Together with the invitation, you will receive guidance notes explaining the next steps to take, the wording of the oath or affirmation of allegiance and citizenship pledge, your personal details for you to check, and our telephone number and address.

You should then contact us to book the next available ceremony.
