Report dumped rubbish
How we deal with flytipping
Dumping rubbish on the streets is unsightly, dangerous and unacceptable. We work with the Police, the Environment Agency and surrounding London boroughs to prevent this practice, which is known as flytipping. If the offenders are identified we prosecute them.
How to report a flytipping problem
You can report by mail, phone, email or online form using the details and links on the right.
We will need as much information on the person(s) responsible as possible, for example the person's description or vehicle registration number.
What happens next
We will remove all small flytips (equivalent to a small van load) within 24 hours and, if possible, take action against those responsible.
Large flytips, classified as anything larger than a small van load, will be dealt with by contractors within four working days on a priority basis.
Any items that have been fly tipped at the side of the road will be collected and separated for recycling. Our teams will endeavour to stop and collect any fly tips they find, unless it would prevent them from completing their scheduled or booked work in which case they will report it so a dedicated team will remove the fly tip.
Rubbish on private land
The Council does not have a duty to remove rubbish from private land. This is the landowner's responsibility, but we may require the landowner to remove rubbish dumped on their land.
If you discover rubbish that has been dumped illegally, or see someone doing so, report it to us as soon as you can so we can investigate the incident. You will need to give us details such as:
- date, time and location
- type of rubbish
- details of vehicle, including registration number (if possible)
- details and descriptions of the people who dumped the rubbish (if possible)
If you can, write this information down on a piece of paper at the time you witness the incident. Sign and date it, and keep it safe. This can aid our investigation.
Photographs of the rubbish and location would be very useful as evidence.
