Bulky household waste
Special collection service for household goods
The Royal Borough of Greenwich's Waste Services team offers special collection services if you want to dispose of something big and bulky, like a sofa or a fridge, or unwanted textiles.
Special collection service
Items which we will collect for a fee are:
- fridges
- freezers
- washing machines
- beds
- sofas.
Carpets need to be cut up and tied into manageable sizes, so that one person can carry it.
Items we DO NOT collect include:
- fitted kitchens
- bathroom suites
- boilers
- sheds and fencing
- rubble.

Arranging for a special collection
If you live in a council flat, contact your caretaker. If you live in a private block of flats, contact your managing agent.
For all other homes, contact us to arrange for a special collection. You will need to provide your name, address, telephone number and the details of items to be collected.
We will take payment and arrange a collection date.
Charges
There is a standard charge of £21 for up to three items. Additional items will be charged at £7 each.
Payment
If you wish to pay by credit card or debit card you must provide your card details at the time of booking.
If you pay by cash or cheque we will need to receive payment into our account before we can confirm your appointment.
What to do on collection day
Leave ONLY the items that you have booked for collection at the front of your property by 6am.
Please ensure that these items do not obstruct the public highway or pavement.
Missed collections
It is unlikely that we will not collect your items on the specified day. If it does happen, inform us immediately.
Alternative ways to dispose of bulky items
If you have bulky items to dispose of, you have a number of choices:
- take items - by car only - to our Reuse and Recycling Centre free of charge
- use our special collection service
- take items by van and pay for disposal at the weighbridge at Nathan Way Transfer Station, Thamesmead. Vans will be weighed on and off the weighbridge and you will be charged by the tonne. If the weight is less than one tonne, you will not be charged for the full tonne but for the proportionate amount.
- hire a skip
- pay another licensed waste carrier to dispose of the goods.
- free textiles collection
- collect and save any unwanted textiles and have them collected for free.
