Neo-natal death and stillbirths

Death of a baby at birth or shortly after birth

Stillbirths and neo-natal deaths which occur in Royal Greenwich need to be registered at the register office.

Registrations are made by appointment. The hospital or maternity bereavement officer may make an appointment on your behalf. Please contact the office if you would prefer to make your own appointment or if you wish to have advice or ask any questions prior to your visit.

Hospitals outside Royal Greenwich

If the birth and/or death occurred at another hospital, but you would prefer to attend this office to register please telephone the register office for advice. This procedure is called 'registration by declaration' and could mean that the issue of legal documents that would allow a funeral to take place may be delayed.

As the procedure involves the electronic transfer of information, you will not be able to sign the register. You may wish to consider whether this is important for you.

Cost of registration

The registration of a stillbirth or neo-natal death is free of charge. The registrar will provide you with a certificate for the burial or cremation of your child or children free of charge but all other certificates are provided on payment of a fee.

The registrar will be able to provide you with a copy of the Department for Work and Pensions leaflet 'What to do after a death' but for other information and links to support groups please visit the Directgov website.
