Financial support for post-16 education

Funding your Gplus course

You may have financial concerns about staying in education. Here we hope to answer your questions.

Students who are aged 16, 17 or 18 do not pay tuition fees for Gplus courses, and some students may be eligible for financial help from the 16 to 19 bursary scheme.

Bursaries available

Students between 16 and 19 years in full-time education or training may receive a bursary, and students most in need will be eligible to receive a bursary of £1,200 a year.

This group includes:

  • people in care
  • care leavers
  • people claiming income support
  • disabled young people who receive Employment and Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance.

Other students facing genuine financial difficulties may be awarded a bursary at the discretion of their school, college or training provider.

Schools, colleges and training providers are responsible for awarding bursaries to students.

With the exception of the £1,200 bursaries for students most in need, the schools decide on the amount.

They will also decide when bursaries are paid, and will set conditions that students should meet to receive a bursary, for example, linked to behaviour or attendance.

How to apply for the 16 to 19 bursary

Visit the Directgov website for information on how to apply for the bursary.
