Financial help for adopters

What financial support is available for adopters?

You may be entitled to some financial help if you are adopting a child.

Benefits and grants

From the time you take a child into your home, you will be eligible for Child Benefit. You may also be eligible for Statutory Adoption Pay, Child Tax Credit and other benefits and grants.

Statutory Adoption Pay

If you are adopting a child, you may be able to get Statutory Adoption Pay.

To qualify you must satisfy the employment and earnings conditions.

How much will I get?

Visit the DirectGov website to find out more including how much you would get.

How do I apply?

Speak to your employer. You will need to give at least 28 days notice of when you want payment to start.

You will then need to give your employer know that you will be taking adoption leave within seven days of being notified that you have been matched with a child for adoption.

You can contact the Welfare Rights team for more advice.
