Become a Tall Ships Sail Trainee

Take part in a voyage of a lifetime

As part of the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta, the Royal Borough of Greenwich is recruiting sail trainees to sail on board the magnificent ships on the first leg of the race from Greenwich to Sines, Portugal.

As a sail trainee, you'll spend 15 nights aboard on a voyage to Sines, Portugal - birthplace of the famous explorer Vasco de Gama - from Saturday 15 April 2017 to Sunday 30 April 2017.

Fabulous experience

Sail Trainees passing The O2

During the voyage of a lifetime you'll get the opportunity, with help from the ships' captains and crews, to:

  • steer at the helm
  • climb the rigging
  • take watches
  • chart the ship's progress.

You'll learn team and leadership skills, time management and build your confidence. There'll also be time to socialise with fellow crew-mates from around the country and the world.

In Sines, you'll take part in a crew parade and prize-giving ceremony before heading back to the UK.

Who can apply?

As long as you're enthusiastic and prepared to learn, we'd like you to sign up! You just need to be over 16 years old and have left secondary school by the date of sailing (15 April 2017).

If you're below 18 years old, you'll need permission from a parent or guardian.

You don't need to live in the Royal Borough of Greenwich to take part - just contact us and we will facilitate your ship placement. To secure your place you will need to pay a deposit of £500 with the balance payable six weeks before you sail.

Do I need to pay?

Each ship in the regatta sets its own prices for each voyage. Prices vary depending on the size and facilities aboard each ship. We estimate the costs to start at £995 for 15 nights.

You'll also need to pay for your return journey to the UK (not on board a ship) and arrange travel insurance for your trip.

Funding for local people

If you need help paying for the experience, you can apply for a sponsored place.

You need to live, volunteer or study in Royal Greenwich and meet a set of criteria in order to apply.
