Becoming a childminder

How to become registered

If you are interested in becoming a registered childminder please contact the Families Information Service who will be able to advise you on the steps you need to take.

It often takes more than six months to register.

The Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY) gives advice to parents and childcare providers.

Benefits

If you start working as a childminder, you may be able to claim a range of benefits.

Some benefits have special rules about earnings from childminding.

These rules mean that childminders are in some cases more likely to get benefit than people doing other types of self-employed work.

If you are working as a childminder or are thinking of becoming one, contact our Welfare Rights service for a free benefits check or for a copy of our Benefits for Childminders factsheet.

Vacancies

To get a list of registered childminder vacancies, contact the Families Information Service. They can also offer additional information about childminding and put you in touch with other colleagues.

You can also look for advertisements in shops and local paper.
