Help with travel costs

Travel discount schemes

There are a number of travel and transport schemes for older people and people with mobility problems, including the Freedom Pass, Blue Badge and Motability Schemes.

You may also be able to get help to meet the cost of travel to hospital.

Residents who are receiving benefits may also be able to get help with travel costs.

Free travel for war pensioners

All war veterans receiving certain payments under the War Pensions Scheme or Armed Forces Compensation Scheme can travel free on London’s public transport. Call Transport for London for an application pack on 0845 331 9872.

More information on the Veterans Concessionary Travel Scheme on the Transport for London website.

Bus and tram discount scheme

Londoners on Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance can enjoy half-price travel on buses and trams.

To apply, you must be aged between 18 and 60 and not be receiving any other travel concession (such as a Freedom Pass).

You can find more information and an application form for the bus and tram discount scheme on the Transport for London website.

You can also contact the Oystercard Helpdesk.

Jobcentre Plus travel discount card

If you are taking part in the Government's Work Programme, you can apply for a Jobcentre Plus travel discount card. You can then travel at reduced rates in London when looking for work. The discounts cover travel on the Tube, DLR, London Overground and National Rail.

This scheme was previously known as the New Deal Scheme.

Access to work scheme

The Access to Work scheme helps disabled people overcome barriers to work. This can include help with transport costs.
