Windows and French windows
Planning permission for new windows
If your property is a flat or a maisonette, planning permission will be required to install new windows or French windows. Planning permission is not normally needed to install new windows or French windows in dwelling-houses, except in conservation areas or if the property is a listed building.
Conservation areas
If your property is a dwelling-house that is located in a conservation area, planning permission to install new windows may be required. Contact Planning to find out whether planning permission is needed. For design advice, contact Building Conservation.
Listed buildings
If your property is a listed building, you will need listed building consent if you wish to install new windows or French windows.
New developments
In some new developments, the rights to carry out alterations to properties without the benefit of planning permission have been removed. For such properties, you will need planning permission to install new windows or French windows.
