Results of the referendum

The referendum on the voting system for UK parliamentary elections was held on 5 May 2011. You can find the voting results for Royal Greenwich on this page.

The question that voters were asked to vote on was:

At present, the UK uses the 'first past the post' system to elect MPs to the House of Commons. Should the 'alternative vote' system be used instead?

Results of count

A 'YES' vote is a vote in favour of the alternative vote system, while a 'NO' vote is a vote in favour of keeping the present 'first past the post' system.

The 'NO' vote received more ballots in Royal Greenwich.

  • Turnout: 33.3 per cent
  • Number of ballot papers counted: 52,657
  • Number of 'YES' votes cast: 20,618
  • Number of 'NO' votes cast: 32,039
  • Number of rejected ballot papers: 91.

The number of ballot papers rejected can be broken down as follows:

  • voting for both answers to the question asked: 23
  • writing or mark by which the voter could be identified: 3
  • unmarked or void for uncertainty: 65.
