Biodiversity
Preserving local wildlife
Maintaining biodiversity is important to environmental health. It also allows us to enjoy our green spaces and the wildlife that thrives in them.
What you can do
If you have a garden or balcony, there are a few simple things you can do to enhance biodiversity in the borough.
If you are interested in preserving the natural biodiversity in your local park, you can join a friends of park group and get involved with decisions concerning the park.
What the Council is doing
We recognise the importance of preserving our natural biodiversity and have:
- piloted a green roof scheme
- promoted biodiversity in our parks and open spaces
- implemented environmental good practices in our parks and open spaces
- designated Sutcliffe Park as a Local Nature Reserve
- set out plans to protect habitats and species in the Biodiversity Action Plan.
In addition, the Council:
- is planting 2,012 trees in the borough prior to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
- requires developers to consider the impact that schemes have on biodiversity and to reduce such impacts, for example, through landscaping, choosing appropriate plant species and installing green roofs.
