You need an appointment to register a death at the Royal Borough of Greenwich register office.

To book an appointment, contact the Register Office.

You should register a death within five days. If you need to arrange an urgent burial for religious timescales, you can get a burial order without registration.

If there are complications, a coroner will need to be involved and the death can't be registered until any investigation is complete. Read more about what happens when a death is reported to a coroner (Gov.UK).

If you want to register a neonatal death, you should read the guidance below.

To register a stillbirth, read the guidance on registering a stillbirth (Gov.UK) or contact the register office.

Registering a death by declaration

You must register a death in the district where it occurred.

If you can't go to the registration office in the district where the death occurred, you can register the death at another district. For example, you can register a death that occurred in Kent through the Royal Borough of Greenwich registrar. This is called registering a death by declaration.

To register a death by declaration, you need to make an appointment at the register office of your choice. The registrar will send the details of the death to the registration office in the district where the death occurred.

You won't be able to get the death certificate until the death has been registered at the district where the death occurred.
